“Greening” the data center has become a hot topic over the past few years, as computing power grows and servers proliferate. Power efficiency is more important than ever to bottom-line concerns, since the typical data center’s costs come from not only the computers themselves, but also the infrastructure to support them (air conditioning units, power conditioning units, etc.). And green storage companies seeking to solve the problem are indeed aplenty these days.
IBM is the latest to get in on the act, announcing today that it has entered into an agreement with the state of New York and Syracuse University to build a new computer data center on the school’s campus that will “incorporate advanced construction and smarter computing technologies to make it one of the most energy efficient data centers in the world.” It is expected to use 50 percent less energy than today’s typical data center, and although much smaller than huge service provider facilities, should provide an interesting test case for continued research.
